We are almost in the winter season. Which sounds crazy when I say it out loud because it feels like just yesterday I was complaining about the heat. It’s funny how where you live can impact your favorite season so much because I remember as a kid I HATED winter. Now that I live in a place with hotter summers than I ever thought possible…winter is my favorite. It’s also busy!
With the holidays there’s always so much to do, pending deadlines, gifts to buy, parties to attend, cheer to spread. Which I love, don’t get me wrong, but it’s easy to neglect ourselves in the spirit of giving to everyone else.
One of my favorite ways to self care during the winter is to keep it cozy and I wanted to share some of my tips and a few things that are great for this.
1. It’s a Vibe
Cozy is a vibe. In order for me to create that vibe every day in the winter I light candles. You might think this is an obvious thing to do when setting any mood, and it is, however in the winter months I do it first thing in the morning and I let them burn all day. I work at home so I can do this any day, but if you work in an office you can do this on the weekends. First, candles warm up the house, so I definitely don’t do this during the summer. And Second, there’s something about having a candle going to is instantly relaxing.
Another way to add to the vibe is with cozy clothing. Alternative Apparel is a brand that I love because they are sustainable, eco friendly and super soft. I love their Waffle Knit Terry crop (wearing below) that is so versatile, I like to wear with jeans as well as PJ’s. It comes in 3 colors and it’s just the perfect go with anything crop. I also really love the Washed Terry Champ Sweatshirt is also good with jeans as well as yoga pants. It’s a 100% cotton sweatshirt and you can literally see the softness. Both are available at Bloomingdales.
My other favorite is the Hanes ecosmart sweats line. I have the Full-Zip Hoodie and the Cinch Bottom Leg Sweatpants that are so soft and fuzzy on the inside. It’s the perfect winter snow day outfit. In additions these are sustainable and something I didn’t know about Hanes, their Ecosmart products use over 50% renewable energy sources in manufacturing and keep over 50 million plastic bottles from landfills every year with recycled polyester. That’s something to feel good about!
2. Have the necessary supplies
My favorite cozy day supplies (aside from cute pup) are hot cocoa and a good book, but the truth is there are some other things that are good to have on hand to make sure the cold weather doesn’t interfere with the coziness.
The first one is ginger. It is literally THE BEST remedy for an upset stomach. I’ve used it so many times – even on cruises when sea sick and it never fails. It also aides in digestion and contains gingerol, known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
I love the Prince of Peace Ginger Chews. They are sweet and spicy, made with natural ingredients, including Sugar, Tapioca Starch, Coconut Oil and ginger and each chew is individually wrapped so they’re great on the go. They also have their Ginger Honey Crystals that have concentrated 12 grams of ginger mixed with honey and it makes a warm tea drink that feels soothing.
I also know a lot of people break out with cold sores in the colder months and that can be really frustrating. While I don’t personally suffer from cold sores, I have friends that do and the Campho-Phenique Cold Sore Treatment is the most powerful over the counter treatment you can get. It soothes, relieves pain and speeds up healing. It also absorbs into the skin quickly so it isn’t showing. Not glamorous, but for those who suffer with cold sores – necessary! There’s always a coupon on there site as well!
3. Take time to pamper
What it means to pamper yourself will vary from person to person, but I find spa like activities to do the trick. Masking and skincare in particular are a great and easy way to pamper at home. I’ve been trying the IMAGE Skincare ORMEDIC balancing facial cleanser which is a mild cleanser made with aloe that cleanses, hydrates and refreshes the skin. Also the gel polish which is a 3-in-1 product, with physical, enzymatic and AHA exfoliation.
and I really like them for a few reasons. They focus on ingredients that actually work and they leave out harsh chemicals, which I feel like I’ve been a broken record about lately. Ingredients have become EXTREMELY important to me and these products are formulated without parabens, sulfates, artificial fragrance, phthalates, mineral oil and triclosan. If you want to hear more details on why I am against some of these ingredients you can check out my podcast episode where I take a bit of a deeper dive into what they are.
Ok I want to hear from you guys! What are some self care tips you have that we can all implement into our winter routines? Leave a comment or hit me up on the gram
