Another Black Creation + My Fashion Philosophy

Black

Someone asked me the other day, ‘What’s your fashion philosophy?’ An interesting question that I had to take a moment and think about. Do I have a philosophy? After a minute I finally replied: ‘Keep it simple.’

People get intimidated by fashion because they think it’s complicated but the truth is, it doesn’t have to be. Using the ‘I don’t have time.’ excuse also wouldn’t be necessary if you stick to keeping things simple. So what does that mean? The best tip I can give is to keep items in your closet that are easily put together yet have some chic-factor. Neutral color palettes, simple silhouettes, and things that mix with other pieces effortlessly.

Let’s take these leather sweats for example. So simple to throw on, they go with everything, yet the fact that they are (faux) leather makes them chic and takes something that would be otherwise basic and makes it not so basic.

I wish I got a better shot of this top. It’s a high-low sweater with a sheer panel in the back. Another example of something simple – a black sweater, yet not basic – sheer panel. The pumps are a classic shoe, but the leopard print adds a little something extra and the ‘basic’ black bag has a unique and interesting shape so it too is anything but boring.

Also play with texture. I’ve been wearing all black a lot lately (case and point here and here) but when I do I make sure to mix fabric textures. These pants are leather, the top is cotton sweater and the shoes are calf hair. I literally threw this outfit on and didn’t think twice about it. I didn’t fuss in front of the mirror and with a long day of meetings it was important to be comfortable.
